Tracking Websites

Categorizing the time you spend on different websites is a major benefit of Rize. Follow the directions below to ensure Rize can properly categorize websites you visit. If Rize is not capturing the URL from a browser, all time spent in that browser will be categorized as Browsing, rather than categorized by URL.

Tracking Websites on Windows

You do not need to enable any permissions to enable website categorization for Rize on Windows. If you're not seeing URLs tracked, you will need to install the Rize Chrome Extension and/or the Rize Firefox Extension.

Tracking Websites on macOS

Rize requires the Automation permission to properly categorize websites on macOS.

When you start using Rize, you should be prompted immediately after using a Supported Browser for the first time to approve the Automation permission. Click "OK" and you should be all set.

You can confirm you've authorized Rize correctly by going to System Settings > Security & Privacy > Automation. You should see Rize listed with checkmarks next to each browser you've approved. Here you can check any browsers that you accidentally clicked "Don't Allow" for or remove this permission.

If you're still not seeing the Automation prompt for a specific browser, you can run the following command in your terminal to reset all Automation permissions:

tccutil reset AppleEvents

Keep in mind this will reset all Automation permissions. You'll be prompted to reauthorize all applications that use the Automation permission, not just Rize. You can read more about that script and reauthorizing the Automation permission here.

If you are still running into issues with website categorization, send us an email at support@rize.io or reach out to us in the support chat.

Incognito Mode on Windows

Rize does its best not to track information in browsers while in incognito mode. Rize will never track the window title when in incognito mode on Chrome, Edge, Brave, Firefox, and Opera. However, due to technological limitations on Windows, for other browsers, titles may be tracked even while in incognito mode. We highly recommend only using incognito mode with Chrome, Edge, Brave, Firefox, and Opera while running Rize. Additionally, never enable the Rize Chrome Extension or the Rize Firefox Extension to run in incognito mode.

Incognito Mode on macOS

Due to some recent changes to Safari, Rize is no longer able to detect when Safari is in incognito mode. For this reason, we do not recommend using Safari in incognito mode. We recommend using a different browser's incognito mode or pausing Rize while using Safari in incognito mode. We completely understand this is not ideal and we're working on ways to improve this. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.
